ORGANIZERS of the Sinulog 2020 want to bring back religiosity and the devotion to one of the country’s biggest religious and cultural events.

So spectators can expect Christian-themed floats during the Mardi Gras-like Sinulog Grand Parade on Jan. 19, 2020.

According to Kenneth Cobonpue, member of the Sinulog Governing Board (SGB), the floats for next year’s parade will be based on themes depicting the story of the arrival and the history of Christianity in the country.

“In fact, for example, our floats before, our floats were free styled. It was very commercial. Everyone is free to do almost anything. Now, we will have themes depicting, when you pick a float, you have to choose a theme. So these themes are based on the arrival of Christianity, the whole story of Christianity in the country, with that of Queen Juana.” he said.

This is in line with the celebration of 500 years of Christianity in the country in 2021.

The parade floats will have two categories: free interpretation and the timeline theme, which can depict pre-colonial scenes, Isla de Oro, Queen Juana’s court, arrival of the galleons, planting of the cross and the discovery of the image of Sto. Niño.

Should a celebrity join the parade or float for free interpretation, he or she must be in character with the theme.

Other planned activities for the Sinulog 2020 include “Sinulog sa Palaboy,” where street children will participate in the Sinulog dance parade as guest performers; “Drum the Beat, Beat the Drum,” a judging of the best drum and bugle corps during the parade; and the “Sinulog Market Street Fair,” which will encourage different municipalities of Cebu to participate and highlight their local produce, handicrafts and delicacies.
