Taiheiyo vows to ease traffic flow near its facility in San Fernando town

A JAPANESE cement manufacturing company along the national highway in Barangay Tubod, San Fernando town, Cebu has committed to come up with a traffic management plan by Dec. 1, 2019, following reports of traffic jams in front of the facility.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia met again with Mayor Lakambini Reluya and officials of Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. on Friday, Nov. 22, to discuss the matter.

The governor told the company’s officials to change its schedule of transporting cement. Big vehicles go in and out of the facility.

“It should not be the majority (of the motorists) who would have to adjust to them. I told them that they should be the one who would have to adjust to the greater number of motorists that they put into a great inconvenience because of their own private business,” Garcia said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

In an earlier meeting last Nov. 12, the Provincial Engineering Office showed a video footage taken last Nov. 11, revealing the long line of motorists as Taiheiyo trucks crossed the national road.

Since there is only one entry and exit point, other motorists have to stop to allow Taiheiyo’s trucks to go in or out of the plant.

The governor said Taiheiyo’s representatives also showed a video presentation during their second meeting, but they failed to show concrete plans on addressing the traffic problem.

She asked the firm to apply the same traffic schedule implemented by Apo Cemex Philippines in Naga City, San Fernando’s neighbor in southern Cebu.

Garcia said she does not want to be accused of playing favorites, so she urged Taiheiyo to follow Apo Cemex’s model.

“There are no more complaints against Cemex. It’s all about Taiheiyo now,” she said in a mix of English and Cebuano.

Since Sept. 3, 2019, Apo Cemex has been stopping its truck operations from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m., and from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. This is to avoid hampering traffic flow along the national highway, especially during rush hour.

“They (Taiheiyo) will try to disseminate the information to all their clients so that they can also adjust. I took their word for it. They committed,” Garcia said.

The Capitol will also a send a team to study the traffic movement in Barangay Tubod in order to come up with a plan to prevent heavy traffic flowing in the coming holidays. (RTF)
