THE embassy of the People's Republic of China (PROC) in Manila has vowed to cooperate in abiding with the local policies of Boracay Island.
Peter Tay, liaison officer of China to Boracay, said in an interview that Consul General Lou Gang met with Malay, Aklan Acting Mayor Floribar Bautista and other officials to discuss better cooperation.
Aside from the Consul General, Chinese Embassy officials for culture and tourism also visited the resort island.
"Mayor Bautista told the Consul about the petty issues involving some Chinese nationals penalized involving littering, smoking violations at the front beach. Hearing this, Gang seeks a full copy of the existing local ordinance. This will be then translated into Chinese and the embassy will distribute it to the visiting Chinese tourists to Boracay for their information," Tang said.
After their meeting at the Astoria hotel, Gang took photos of the signages on local ordinances being displayed at the front beach.
Aside from the courtesy visit, the Chinese Embassy also donated six red all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) worth P1.4 million for the local baywatch program of Boracay.
Leonard Tirol of the Boracay Fire, Rescue and Volunteers Incorporated (BFRAV) said the ATVs will be stationed at the front beach, while some will be given to the Philippine National Police to be used for patrolling.
Last March 2019, the Consul General met with the officials of the Department of Tourism (DOT) to help promote Boracay to Chinese tourists.
According to the DOT, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Boracay from January to October 31, 2019 were recorded to have reached a total of 389,885.
