Sanchez: Span of control

WE LEARN from management of the concept of span of control, the term now used more commonly in business management, particularly human resource management.

Span of control refers to the number of subordinates a supervisor has. A manager avoids overreach, being in many places handling so many people all the time.

Now how people can Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano handle? As the House Speaker, his focus is on the House of Representatives.

Yet, he is all over the place for the P11 billion-worth hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

As Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo insists, Speaker Alan is accountable to all that relates to the SEA Games.

"Kung anong bulilyaso doon, siyempre dahil siya ang nagpapatakbo accountable siya.”

In other words, the buck should stop with him. With over 9,000 volunteers, mostly Filipinos, how can Cayetano macro-manage the holding the international meet in the country?

Yet it is ex-cager Chris Tiu took the fall and has to apologize to the foreign players.

“We sincerely apologize to our athlete guests from Timor-Leste, Myanmar and Cambodia for the inconvenience caused to them by the confusion regarding their transportation and hotel arrangements.”

Cambodian football team slept on the carpet circulated on social media. Reports said they had no choice because their accommodation was not yet ready.

The Timor-Leste athletes were initially sent to the Century Hotel, but they should have been brought to the nearby Hotel Jen.

I thought the buck stops with Cayetano? Why is he having a fall guy? Cayetano chairs the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC).

Well, the blame should fall in Cayetano’s shoulders. Let us see him take the

blame and admit his administrative deficiencies on event management.
