Abu Sayyaf leader killed, 5 followers wounded in clash

AN ABU Sayyaf sub-leader and five of his followers were killed, while 11 -- seven soldiers and four bandits -- wounded in two separate clashes in Sulu, military officials said Monday, November 25.

Colonel Ignatius Patrimonio, Army's 1102nd Infantry Brigade commander, said an Abu Sayyaf bandit was killed while four others were wounded in the first clash that took place around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, November 23, in Sitio Itum, Barangay Kabuntakas, Patikul.

Patrimonio said the slain Abu Sayyaf bandit was only identified as a certain Jalaide.

Patromonio said five soldiers from the Army's 32nd Infantry Battalion were also wounded during the clash, which lasted for about 45 minutes.

Patrimonio said the clash ensued while the troops were checking the reported presence of Abu Sayyaf bandits in Kabuntakas, Patikul.

The second clash happened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 24, in Sitio Huton Mahablo in the village Silangkan, Indanan, he added.

He said five Abu Sayyaf bandits, including bandit sub-leader Sibih Pisih, were killed in the clash, which lasted for about 30 minutes.

Patrimonio said Pisih was in-charge of the ASG's offshore kidnappings, specifically in the borders of Tawi-Tawi and Sabah.

Pisih also has a standing warrant of arrest for the massacre of 22 civilians sometime in 2015 in Talipao, Sulu.

Patrimonio said two soldiers from the Army's 2nd Special Forces Battalion were wounded in the second clash.

The troops have recovered one M653 rifle, one Barret sniper rifle, and a caliber .45 pistol.

Patrimonio said the remains of the slain Abu Sayyaf bandits "are now for forensic investigation of whom three are yet to be identified."

Major General Corleto Vinluan Jr., Joint Task Force Sulu commander, congratulated the troops for the series of successful combat operations against the Abu Sayyaf.

Vinluan said they will hunt down the bandits one-by-one and will not stop until all of them are brought to justice. (SunStar Zamboanga)
