Cop accidentally shoots mother to death

A POLICE major has accidentally shot his mother dead.

Reports have it that Major Dante Cabungcal and his live-in partner Connie Brillo were having a squabble inside their room in Sitio Pader, Batang Pulung Maragul, Angeles City before the incident.

Cabungcal's mother, Purita, knocked on the door, attempting to intercede and pacify the duo.

But the police officer fired five shots using his firearms, hitting his mother and 17-year-old nephew, Miquito Cabungcal.

The suspect then isolated himself inside their bedroom together with his live-in partner.

A responding team from the city's Police Station 3 requested a back-up team from the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) led by Emmet Nunag, who started negotiating with Cabungcal.

Cabungcal, however, requested for media personnel.

A desk editor of ABS-CBN, John Mark Guda, reportedly arrived to help the cops negotiating with Cabungcal.

Colonel Joyce Patrick Sangalang, city police director, later arrived and convinced Cabungcal to surrender.

The suspect, together with his live-in partner, came out unarmed and voluntarily surrendered to Sangalang.

Cabungcal was taken to the Police Station 3 for follow-up investigation.

Recovered from the suspect's room were the one pistol STEYR Mannlicher 9MM, one magazine containing four live ammunition, and one Pietro Beretta 9MM pistol.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives led by Police Lieutenant Richard Frias, who processed the crime scene, was able to gather nine fired cartridge cases and nine deformed slugs both from a 9mm caliber pistol.

The victim's body was brought to the Pangilinan Funeral Parlor but her relatives refused to have it autopsied.

Cabungcal is currently detained at Police Station 3 and is waiting for the family's decision to file a formal complaint against him.
