'Kain Na' features unique delicacies of the South

KAGAY-ANONS were treated to a gastronomic extravaganza as the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched its Kain Na! 2019 Food and Travel Festival on November 22 to 24 at Centrio Ayala Mall.

Foodies and food enthusiasts were presented with a wide array of local cuisine of the different regions in Mindanao such as farm produce and tasty delicacies from Northern Mindanao, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga, and Soccksargen.

"Gusto lang nato ma continue ang interest sa mga tao for the reason that we want tourism to be a platform for economic... like it will help economically, especially the farmers," Decius Esmedalla of DOT-Northern Mindanao said.

The exhibitors of last week's food and travel expo were composed of hotels and restaurants, farm resorts, agro-industry groups, among others, namely: Binahon and Alomah's Nature Farm of Bukidnon; Culinary Institute of Cagayan de Oro; Fopanormin; Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (Cohara); Seda Hotel; Mercedes; Dennis Coffee Garden, Paglinawan Organic Eco Farm and DO Dumingag Organics from Zamboanga Peninsula; RJH Food Products from Soccsksargen; JB Nature Farm from Caraga; Lanao del Norte Food Processor; and others.

Apart from the food exhibits, there were also other activities lined up for each day such as food tasting and cooking demonstrations by various chefs from different regions.

These chefs, according to Esmedalla, were able to represent the unique food items in their area.

"We also have special presentation coming from Lanao de Norte because we also want that Maranao delicacies should be a part of the promotions para we can give them more or ample opportunity for people to also appreciate that we have this delicacies na masasarap din aside from the other products," Esmedalla said.

Farm sites, he added, is the focus of attention of the DOT as such, most of the exhibitors are are producers coming from identified farm sites of the tourism department.

Last week's event was the Mindanao leg of Kain Na 2019 which was spearheaded by the Department of Tourism in partnership with Ayala Malls.
