Sigue: Visual learning drives jobs

MORE than 80 percent of people respond better to visual information or images than plain text. Ninety percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual. Students absorb 20 to 40 percent information from visual information more than other platforms. Eighty-three percent of learning occurs visually and the remaining 17 percent come from other senses. There is just a long list of reasons why visual information today is very vital that the businesses and jobs around creating, designing and curating such information is on the uptrend.

I am fortunate to relearn these important bits of information last week as Bacolod's latest ICT locator opened shop. SlideGenius is reputed to be the world's leading PowerPoint design agency that caters to the

presentation requirements of Fortune 500 companies and corporate clients. They also design and animate videos for business, branding and marketing needs. The more demand for content and graphics, the bigger the need for human talent.

SlideGenius founder Rick Enrico is an inspiring entrepreneur who built the company in San Diego, California after years of receiving many positive reviews for his presentations. Rick had the vision to not only share his talent in building presentations that sell and close deals but also to create jobs for graphic designers. Soon he opened another site in New York and eventually in 2015, he expanded to the Philippines.

SlideGenius Interactive opened in Makati City with a full suite of designers. During their early years, his team was already on the lookout for a second site outside of Metro Manila. This year, I am excited to share that they decided to open in Bacolod and aims to bring their pool to around 200 designers in 36 months.

Last week, I took advantage of Rick's presence in the city and arranged a talk with students in the field of multimedia and digital disciplines to listen. My gratefulness to the University of St. La Salle (USLS) for accepting the challenge of hosting the event. Academe leaders who constantly show great interest in consistently calibrating with industry standards especially for building skills and competencies required in information and communications technology or ICT-enabled jobs and

opportunities are commendable.

My overarching role beyond my official tasks and positions has always been to bridge different sectors in creating jobs and investments around the country. Hence, industry partners have always reached out to me to connect them with the right people and to create meaningful activities and touch points to inspire our youth and our workforce.

Along with the coming of SlideGenius and the welcoming spirit of USLS, I decided to launch another learning platform called Sharing Points On Technology, Leadership, Industry, Talent Development, and Entrepreneurship or SPOTLITE. For its maiden voyage, the SPOTLITE was on digital creatives.

In Mckinsey Center for Government's "Education to Employment: Designing a System that Works," the study revealed that around the world, governments and businesses face a conundrum: high levels of youth unemployment and a shortage of job seekers with critical skills. How can a country successfully move its young people from education to employment? What are the problems? Which interventions work? How can these be scaled up? These are the crucial questions to be asked. Innovators in the industry, academe and public sector should work together to answer these questions. The goal of SPOTLITE is to serve as a learning platform for these three sectors to work together in bringing industry and global trends to the knowledge of young people.

The objective of a SPOTLITE forum is to focus on opportunities in the creative industry, skills and competencies required and strategies to ensure steady growth of digital creative economy for Bacolod and Negros Occidental. SPOTLITE also targets to provide a venue for academe, government and industry to network for future collaborations. I am contemplating on bringing in the future.

Next week, I will travel to Iligan City for the second year of the Digital Careers Expo, a platform for freelancers to come together and learn from one another. I am praying we can bring the spotlight on other new industries, too.
