NCC sports facility serves as training ground of athletes

ANGELES CITY -- A top official of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) said the newlyconstructed sports complex inside the New Clark City is designed to be the training ground for Filipino athletes.

PamCham President Rene Romero issued the statement following a criticism that the Rizal Stadium should have been rehabilitated in the amount of P1.2 billion instead of spending P9.5 billion to construct a sports facility in Clark.

"The sports facility which is an issue at New Clark City is designed to be a training ground for our Filipino athletes. This has been the request of the athletes to the past administrations that is why I think we should support the new facilities that are being built in New Clark City," Romero said.

The business leader saidthe construction of a new sports complex is better than renovating an old one like the Rizal stadium.

"With regards to the idea of renovating the Rizal stadium instead of putting up a new one, I believe that it's better to put up a new one which is now in Clark because at least we have another one aside from that in Manila. We know the traffic congestion there and there is a looming threat, the Big One, the earthquake," Romero said.

The businessman said he supports the organizing committee of the SEA Games headed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and Bases Conversion and Development Authority Vince Dizon.

"With regards to the palpak (glitches) being experienced by foreign guests and athletes, I think in the next few days these will be corrected. I think the organizers at the moment are overwhelmed but I am sure they can cope up in the next few days," Romero said.

Glitches also happen in big events like the Olympics, he said.

"This is really a big event; you cannot just organize it just like that but of course we have to support. Let us stop making some public statements that may damage the image of the Filipino people," Romero said.
