THE 34-kilometer stretch of Kennon Road will be opened to motorists going to Baguio City starting November 29, 2019.

The Inter-Agency Task Group Kennon said the highway will be open every Friday from 6 a.m. to Monday 6 p.m. of every week to ease the heavy traffic along Marcos Highway and Tubao-Asin-Nangalisan Road due to the influx of tourists going to the summer capital especially during weekend.

The Cordillera Regional Risk Reduction and Management Council, a member of the task group, said the window is open only for one-way traffic and for light vehicles weighing five tons and below.

Motorists are also advised to remain on the right upward lane, as there are residents using the downward lane.

Motorists that will traverse the road are also advised to observe the speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour, traffic and parking rules, especially when going for stopover at the Lion's Head.

Meanwhile, tourists who want to have a photo opportunity at the Lion's Head must get a clearance first from the checkpoint at Camp 7 viewdeck, as they will only be allowed to enter upon surrendering a valid government issued ID or driver's license and return to retrieve it after their visit.

"Instances of inclement weather and sudden occurrence of localized thunderstorm where the landslide is imminent in the area, Kennon will be immediately closed upon the recommendation of the Tuba Municipal Police Station, local government unit, and the Department of Public Works and Highways," the advisory added.

Benguet Governor Melchor Diclas backed the decision of the task group, adding the Provincial Government will continue to monitor the entry of pigs and pork products from areas affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF).

"We have station in place to monitor the entry of pigs and pork products," he said.

Aside from Kennon Road, checkpoints in local government units remain in Marcos Highway, Tadiangan, Banganan in Sablan, Bokod, Bangao in Buguias and Colalo in Mankayan.

In September, the governor imposed Executive Order 2019-36, declaring a temporary ban on the entry of live pigs, fresh and frozen pork and all pork products from provinces and cities affected by the disease.

As of October 31, the Provincial Veterinary Office recorded a total of 60 shipments denied. The shipments were composed of 123 swine, 38,287.36 kilograms of pork and assorted meat products, 36,360 pieces of eggs, 82 native chicken, 61 ducks, four turkey, eight dove and two cattle in lieu of executive order.

At least five dead swine and 44 dead chickens were also buried by the veterinary office.
