Sungduan: Communicative skills

ONE vital life skill that one should have to achieve success is to have communicative skills. Since communicative skills are needed to succeed, it is very important that it should be improved and achieved.

Distinguished toastmaster Dr. Sonja Chan said people who get ahead in life are those who have communicative skills and something which Toastmasters Club can do to its members.

“It’s so very important for communicative skills to be improved and achieved. As an individual no matter what area in life you are associated with you need to survive, you need to be successful in terms of communication,” she said.

She added that Toastmasters Club provides a positive learning environment to become effective communicators and leaders which in turn fosters self-confidence and personal growth.

“Toastmasters International is where leaders are made. It has these two-pronged achievement staircases where we would have communicative skills and leadership skills improved and achieved,” she said.

Moreover, she said everything in Toastmasters revolves around the club starting from its structured, regular meetings and more.

Toastmasters International is based in Mission Viejo, California, USA with a network of 16,800 clubs across 143 countries.

In Baguio City, forerunner is the Pines City Toastmasters Club headed by one-time district governor Manny Salenga and area governors Tom Panis and Ric Bayao. More clubs then came after which include The Baguio Professional Toastmasters Club, (renamed Funshine TMC), The La Union Executive TMC, The Hedcor TMC, The Philex TMC, PMA’s CCAFP TMC (Cadet Corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines), The Baguio Ecozone TMC, The Synergy TMC, Baguio Forensic Toastmasters Club, The PIA TMC and the newly chartered Cordillera Toastmasters Club with no less than Distinguished Toastmaster Nomel Gilongos of District 75 conducted the seminar and mentoring to the new club lately.

Chan explained that at each Toastmaster meeting, there are prepared speeches that will be delivered and will receive constructive evaluation allowing for the acknowledgment of each individual’s speaking strengths as well as providing valuable insights into areas for improvement.

She added that a number of recognition and achievement awards are then available for those who meet the requirements set by Toastmasters International.

Furthermore, she said that of this Toastmaster experience, no less than Former United States Astronaut Captain James A. Lovell says, “I found Toastmasters an excellent means of improving my speaking ability. I feel my membership in Toastmasters International was very important in my later success...”

“Needless to say, a profusion of like comments can be gathered from all over the world and through time. And we could say that success does start with Toastmasters,” Chan emphasized.
