Task Force: Be more alert

THE African Swine Fever (ASF) Task Force of the Cebu Provincial government urged local officials in Cebu to strengthen their monitoring and surveillance of seaports now that several regions surrounding Central Visayas have lifted their ban on live hogs and pork products from Luzon.

“We’ll be strengthening our border control facing Region 8 because we don’t know if the hogs from Manila would pass the port of Matnog and then enter the port of Allen and then Samar,” said Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).

Vincoy said the PVO received reports that Region 8 has lifted its ban on pork and pork-related products pursuant to an order from the Department of the Interior and Local Government for local officials to lift the ban they had imposed on processed meat products containing pork amid the outbreak of ASF in some parts of Luzon.

“Take note that we have the Municipality of Pilar (Camotes) which is only 15-20 minutes by fast craft, if by boat, from Ormoc City. It’s possible that some products would pass through Region 8 en route to Cebu,” Vincoy said.

Earlier, the PVO monitored the entry into Cebu of pork products from Luzon brought in by private vehicles coming from Region 8.

The products were confiscated in the islands of Camotes and Bantayan. (ANV)
