PNP assures stringent security measures for SEA Games

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) spokesperson Brigadier General Bernard Banac on Friday, November 29, assured that security measures are in place for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Banac said an incident similar to what happened in Initao College in Misamis Oriental on November 28 would not happen in any of the areas of convergence for the SEA Games.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Magno and a man who went amok inside the college were killed when a grenade that the latter was brandishing exploded.

(We assure the public that such incident would not happen in any of the venues for the SEA Games because security has been really tightened. There will be security checks upon entering the venues.)

Banac said the people going inside the venues will have to undergo inspection through x-ray machines, metal detectors and bomb sniffing dogs.

(If anybody tries to enter the venues with any explosive device, our men will immediately detect these. Security measures are also in place at the vehicle entrances of these venues.)

Earlier, the PNP said at least 47,000 law enforcers and security volunteers will be deployed for the maintenance of peace and order during the games.

They will be deployed to various venues in Metro Manila Laguna, Bulacan, Tagaytay, Subic and New Clark City sports complex in Capas, Tarlac.

Meanwhile, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) acting director Brigadier General Debold Sinas said as of 6 a.m. Friday, a total of 1,680 athletes have arrived and are billeted in 27 accommodation facilities in Metro Manila.

Nearly 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in the games from November 30 to December 11, 2019. (SunStar Philippines)
