Bishop calls for prayers for Filipino athletes

AN OFFICIAL of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Friday, November 29, rallied the faithful to pray for the successful campaign of Filipino athletes in the 30th Southeast Asian Games that will officially open tomorrow (Saturday).

In an interview, CBCP Commission on the Laity chairman Bishop Broderick Pabillo urged the people to offer their prayers for Team Pilipinas.

"Pray, not only for their victory, but also for them to be safe," Pabillo said.

Team Pilipinas is composed of a 1,094-strong contingent, who will compete in the 30th SEA Games.

The Philippines last became the overall champion in 2005, when the country hosted the SEA Games. In 2018, the Philippines placed only sixth overall.

Aside from prayers, the prelate also encouraged the public to show their support by actually following the games.

"We support them by following the games on TV and on social media," the bishop said.

"Those who are able can watch the games live," added Pabillo.

The 30th SEA Games will kick off at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan on Saturday, November 30.

Nearly 10,000 athletes will participate in over 500 sports events that will be held until December 11, 2019. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
