Prepare for effects — Pagasa

THE state weather bureau has advised Cebuanos to prepare for the effects of incoming Typhoon Kammuri or Typhoon Tisoy, its local name once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Weather specialist Angelica Orongan, of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas bureau, based in Lapu-Lapu City, said that although Tisoy would not directly hit Cebu, its radius could affect parts of northern Cebu in the coming days.

“It is expected to enter PAR on Saturday evening (Nov. 30, 2019) or on Sunday morning (Dec. 1). We will not experience direct effects in Cebu,” Orongan said in a mix of English and Cebuano.

“But once it nears from the night of Dec. 2 until Dec. 3, it will have a wide radius, maybe around 300 to 400 kilometers, and so there is a possibility for us to raise the wind signal in the northern part of Cebu,” she added.

According to Central Weather Bureau, Taiwan’s government meteorological research and forecasting institution, a storm radius is the distance from the center of the typhoon which averages between 200 and 300 kilometers, with bigger ones at 400 to 500 kilometers.

Typhoon Kammuri was spotted 1,370 km east of Southern Luzon as of 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 with current sustained maximum winds at 140 km/hour.

It is expected to make landfall in the Bicol Region.

Although at its current level, Kammuri remains within the typhoon category, Pagasa is not ruling out the chance that it may develop into a super typhoon, Orongan said.

Meanwhile, Cebu could expect cloudy weather with scattered rains and strong winds on the first week of December, according to Pagasa.

“Let’s all be prepared. For those who have classes or work at these times, keep yourselves updated with Pagasa advisories to be aware of typhoon signals if ever. Let us also bring umbrellas or even better, bring raincoats because we do not only expect rains but strong winds,” she said.

Orongan also called on fishermen to keep themselves updated on Pagasa advisories even as there has yet been no gale warning issued for Central Visayas at this time. (WBS)
