Masbad: Cyber Monday advice

CYBER Monday. In this age of borderless shopping, it’s every tech geek’s wet dream to get in on the best deals for any tech that’s got a deal attached to it. And right now, the biggest place you can go to for these deals is Amazon. They even have a Cyber Monday Countdown sale already happening. And those deals run through the entire Amazon catalog. And we all know how extensive that catalog is. It’s an A to Z kind of thing.

If you’re going to get in on the action, you should know what your budget is and what you want to get. It’s no use going around the entire site looking for things or letting the site make you wander around until you fill up your cart with nonsense.

The first advice is to set a budget. Always remember that the prices there are in US dollars and you’ll have to take into account the exchange rate at the time of purchase. Add the taxes plus shipping and the bottom line can balloon like a pufferfish real fast. And speaking of budget, I also suggest that you use a debit card that can be accepted on Amazon. I highly recommend that you fund your Paypal account if you already have one. If you don’t, sign up for one. Another option would be Paymaya. I haven’t tried purchasing with it on Amazon though. I have used it on other online purchases like my licenses for my DJ’ing software and that works. My hunch tells me that it should work fine with Amazon.

The second piece of advice is to put together a shopping list. And once you have that list, stay on that list. Get in. Get out. Don’t look at any other items because, if you do, I guarantee that that will destroy your budget in no time. Also, while you’re putting together the list, it’s important to do your research on the products you want. Just because one brand has it doesn’t mean that other brands may have a similar product that may be a better deal than the brand you want. Well, if you really can’t be swayed away from your preferred brand, by all means, go for it.

The third piece of advice is to avail of third-party forwarding service Shipping Cart, Johnny Air Cargo, and My Shopping Box. There are others out there that you can avail of but these are the three popular ones that I’ve come across with. Direct shipping from Amazon can be a bit expensive especially when you have multiple items. Also, other items do not and will not ship to the Philippines. And in those cases, these third-party forwarding service companies will come in handy.

Of course, there’s always the reliable pasabay-sa-kamag-anak-na-uuwi-galing-States way. The only problem I see with this method is that you’ll be limited with what you can ask your relatives to bring with them for you. If you must go with this, I’d recommend that you have your relatives carry for you those items that you deem to be time-sensitive. The other items you can do without for the next month or so, use the third-party forwarding services.

Fourth advice, don’t get too bummed if you don’t get some of the items you want or if you’re not able to get the discount you hoped for. It’s Cyber Monday so the inventory can get depleted faster than you can say “You’re mine!”. If you didn’t get it now, keep it on your Amazon wish list. Some good deals will come soon for sure.

Have fun and don’t blow that budget!
