Albindo takes on new foe

CEBUANO prospect Allan Albindo hopes to follow up his recent success in the international MMA stage by winning back-to-back fights in Rich Franklin’s ONE Warrior Series. Albindo is up against last minute replacement “Prince” Toreq of Indonesia on Dec. 4, 2019 in Singpore.

“We have seen him fight because Toreq and Allan fought in the same event. He’s also a striker. We are going to fight him striking using the way of the Yaw-Yan Ardigma system,” said Albindo’s mentor and Yaw-Yan Ardigma Cebu founder Master Benigno “Ekin” Cañiga in an interview by SunStar Cebu.

Albindo was supposed to take on Pakistani Asad Warriach but the latter backed out for unknown reasons. Albindo dropped his OWS debut after losing to Manthan Rane by unanimous decision last June 20, 2019. He bounced back with a third round stoppage over Mohammad Arif Izzudin in his second OWS fight last Aug. 6, 2019.

Toreq also fought in that same Aug. 6 event, wherein he won via a first round stoppage after his opponent Mohd Nor Hidayat suffered an injury.

Cañiga believes a more improved and experienced Albindo will be seeing action on Wednesday night against Toreq.

“Allan has improved his ground game very much. He just has to focus because MMA is very unpredictable. Anything can happen in the first round. I advised Allan not to take any chances. If he can win it quick and early, the better. We just have to keep our focus and hopefully be guided by Sto. Niño,” said Cañiga.

Albindo is 1-1, while Toreq is 3-3.

Two other Filipinos are seeing action in the same show, Rockie Bactol and Rocel Catalan.

Bactol (1-1) is up against Chinese Xie Wei (4-2), while Catalan (1-0) locks horns with Ji Yeon Seo (8-4). (EKA)
