SOME events of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games were delayed after Typhoon Tisoy made landfall on the southeastern part of Luzon on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.

The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) has announced the postponement of some games as confirmed by the SEA Games technical delegates and competition managers.

Most outdoor events affected by the typhoon were postponed. These are beach volleyball, shooting, skateboarding, underwater hockey, petanque, sepak takraw, canoe/kayak, muay and surfing. The venues of these games are in Metro Manila, Southern Luzon and Pampanga.

The rest of the sporting events went on as scheduled.

However, the typhoon did not stop the Filipino athletes from soaring as the host country continued its lead in the overall medal tally.

Team PHL was well ahead of other nations, racking up 47 gold, 28 silver and 16 bronze medals as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Vietnam was far behind with 22 golds, 26 silver and 24 bronze medals.

Cebuanos contributed to the Philippines’ winning efforts. On Day 3 of the Games, Elreen Ann Ando (weightlifting – women’s 64 kilograms) added a silver medal to the haul of Cebuanos thus far.

On Day 1, Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Cañeda had bagged three golds in dancesport: for single dance-samba, single dance-chachacha and single dance-rumba, while Dexler Bolambao won a gold medal in arnis - LS bantamweight (55 kilograms and less).

Metodio Suico Jr. also produced a golden performance as part of the three-man sepak takraw team (hoop event).

Adding silver medals to the haul were Andrew Kim Remolino in the individual triathlon, John Febuar Ceniza in weightlifting (55 kilograms), and Niño Surban in cycling-mountain bike cross country.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch” Ramirez commended the performance of the Filipino athletes in the past three days.

“After almost three days of intense competitions, and with Team Philippines performing magnificently in the face of world-class foes, I would like to send my message of congratulations to all who fought valiantly to uphold national pride. You are all winners to us,” Ramirez said in a statement.

In Talisay City, Cebu, Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas Jr. announced that Remolino, who is from Talisay, will get P20,000 in cash assistance from the City Government for his feat.

The 2019 SEA Games will end on December 11. (RSC, FMD, RGT)
