MORE time for incumbent barangay officials to implement programs and an increase in the number of voters in Cebu are among the advantages of the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections, a poll official said on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday evening, December 3, 2019, signed the law postponing the 2020 BSKE.

In an interview, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Provincial Election Supervisor Lionel Marco Castillano said the postponement will allow barangay officials to have longer terms.

"Ang atong advantage ani is first ang atong mga barangay officials mas mataas-taas ang ilang term kay kung sa balaod before nga gipostpone, they will only have around two years sa pagpanerbisyo kulang kaayo to implement their plans and projects," Castillano added.

The postponement of the BSKE will also allow Comelec officials more time to conduct voter's registration, which is set to start sometime between January and February 2020.

"Cebu is always increasing its voters population. We must remember nga even atong youth nagkadaghan kay una is from other provinces mag migrate diri for job opportunities," he added.

Under the newly signed Republic Act 11462, the conduct of the next BSKE is reset to December 5, 2022. (SunStar Cebu)
