FRIZZ is infinitely frustrating. Hair gets frizzy when strands are dry and try to absorb moisture in the air. With our high humidity (read: moisture in the air), this makes the outermost part of our hair, the cuticle, raise and appear expanded. If hair is healthy and moisturized, the cuticle stays down and the strand is smooth.
Hair doesn’t have to be colored or processed to become dry. It can also be caused by sun damage, chlorine, or using strong shampoos that strip hair of moisture.
There are countless hair masks and conditioners out there promising to smoothen hair, but most of them just contain dimethicone. The silicone coats your hair so that it appears smooth and silky, but it doesn’t actually do anything in terms of repair.

I recently tried out the Maskeratine hair mask from the Kerastase Discipline range at David’s Salon. This started by having my scalp and strands analyzed by a Kerastase scalp scanner. This device helps determine current hair and scalp health and what treatments can best improve them. I had minor flakes on the scalp from hair products I hadn’t rinsed out properly (dandruff is a different issue!). I was faced with the magnified truth about how dry some of my strands are, and saw where I had breakage too.
The treatment includes a shampoo, head massage and blow dry if you want to indulge a little and feel like a million bucks after less than an hour. Products are available to purchase if you want to continue the hair care at home.
The Discipline range specifically addresses frizzy, unruly hair with softening agents, lipids and wheat protein for longer-term effects of strengthening and smoothening hair. Of course, hair looked and felt glossy and salon perfect after the treatment, but the real test was how hair would be in the coming days. I was told there was no need to shampoo the next day. I was amazed my hair felt smooth and was frizz-free the next two days, and even after shampooing with my regular stuff at home, hair still felt softer on the third day. And this was after just one treatment!
