Sungduan: Nakem 2020 at BSU

BENGUET State University in La Trinidad, Benguet will be the host of Nakem Conferences International Philippines 2020.

This was revealed by Nakem Conferences International, Philippines Chapter board of director Dr. Sonja Chan following a courtesy meet with BSU president and immediate evaluation meeting of the BOD for the said event lately.

She said the announcement first came from Nakem International President Dr. Aurelio Solver Agcaoili, professor at the University of Hawaii and founder of the said group.

The said activity will be coordinated by the Nakem Conferences, Philippines Board of Directors headed by the president Dr. Alegria Visaya with the membership made up of professors from diverse universities in the country.

Dr. Chan also said that one of the highlights of the event include the paper presentations which is open to everyone, especially those in the academe.

“These yearly conferences are geared toward paper presentations and cultural events along the lines of Linguistic Justice and Emancipatory Education, among other things. Everybody is invited to come and join and participate in these enriching activities. Organized by the University of Hawaii at Manoa Ilokano Program,” Dr. Chan said.

Nakem Conferences International and Nakem Conferences Philippines event next year will center on the theme: Indigenous Communities and Languages, and Engaged Inclusion for Civics and Citizenship. Papers dealing with the theories and practices of indigeneity and the plurality of human life will be most welcome.

The evaluative preparation meeting held by the Nakem International, Philippines, was attended by BSU Vice-President Dr Sam S. Poliden representing the University President Dr Feliciano Calora Jr. Apart from her other Board Members who attended were Drs. Danilo Alterado, Leticia Benabese, Noemi Rosal, Elizabeth Valera, Gloria Tuzon, Elizabeth Calinawagan, Avelina Gatdula Bonifacio Ramos, and Jaime Raras.

“Some thrusts of the organization include re-evaluating the role of languages and diversity in the life of the Filipino. Issues in linguistic justice, cultural democracy and multilingual education are critical issues that have to be addressed -and these conferences hopefully are responded to,” said Dr. Chan.

Furthermore, she said it is a significant reality and a fact that until recently, the University of Hawaii Ilokano Program was the only degree-granting program in the world and now the Don Mariano Marcos State University (DMMSU) in the Philippines also does. Other Philippine universities, however, offer Ilokano as part of a coursework for a degree in other fields such as in literature, education, language studies, language teaching, and linguistics, comparative literature, and English studies.

Through Nakem Conferences they hope to further enhance not only the significant value of the Ilokano language but of all the languages in the Philippines.

May this be event be supported and participated by everyone in the pursuit of preserving and developing the different languages in the country specifically the Iloco.
