DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd)-Eastern Visayas Regional Director Dr. Ramir Uytico led Friday, December 6, the awarding ceremony for this year’s 37 outstanding educators and innovative division personel following the banner project of the regional office.

“This is my gift to you. I have been in the region for more than three years now and I am a gift slowly unpacked with all the challenges that we have been through,” said Uytico.

During the awarding rites dubbed as “The Gift of Leading: A Legacy for Greatness,” Uytico lauded the support of Dr. Luisa Bautista-Yu, former regional director, whose retirement paved the way for his assignment in the region in August 2016, and Dr. Arnulfo Balane, Ceso V, his new assistant regional director.

“Because today is gift-giving, the awardees are considered gifts. Your awards are your gifts. What your superintendents have done to you are their gifts to you,” Uytico said in an elaborate ceremony in time for the Christmas season at the Summit Hotel in Tacloban City.

“I hope that the gifts that you are about to receive tonight will be valued in your respective divisions, and all of you should be proud in proclaiming to all the 13 divisions that in the DepEd-Regional Office 8 we have been doing great things and that Region 8 is always great,” added the regional director in an emotional speech.

The 51-year-old education official who hails from Cebu City maintained that there are more in Eastern Visayas than the Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.

Uytico then urged all the awardees to always take pride of their achievements while thanking the 13 schools division superintendents for “passionately” implementing the regional banner Project Lead (Lead, Empower, and Achieve through Data-driven decisions).

Leading the list of awardees is Tacloban City’s Dr. Mariza Magan, Ceso V, as the 2019 Outstanding Schools Division Superintendent in the Division Banner Project Implementation of E-Kultura.

Meanwhile, Bautista-Yu challenged the honorees to continue to be creative and harness their leadership skills to the maximum for the “greater good” in their respective divisions, saying their awards “are the best Christmas gifts to humanity.”

The retired education official also reminded the awardees of the key qualities of a successful leader.

“In the field of education, leading is enlisting and guiding the talents and energies of teachers, pupils, and parents towards achieving a common educational aim. You cannot lead if you do not trust and empower others,” she said.

Bautista-Yu added that great leaders should be “communicative, collaborative and connective, having positive energy and confidence, committed, persistent, have the willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn, entrepreneurial, and innovative.”

Uytico's banner project has led to the success of the 4,571 school-based banner projects that eventually brought recognition to the DepEd-Eastern Visayas to be ISO-certified. (SunStar Philippines)
