Ancajas to make 8th title defense of IBF belt

FILIPINO star Jerwin Ancajas defends his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight title for the eighth time on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019 (PHL time) and takes on Chilean challenger Miguel Gonzalez at the Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico.

The 27-year-old Ancajas tipped the scales at exactly 115 pounds, while Gonzalez weighed-in at 114.8 pounds.

Ancajas was supposed to defend his crown on Nov. 2, 2019 against challenger Jonathan Rodriguez as the main supporting bout for the Saul Alvarez vs. Sergey Kovalev bout. However, Rodriguez was forced to pull out of the fight after having problems with his US visa.

Ancajas last fought on May 4, 2019 in Stockton, California. He defended his belt with a sixth-round stoppage of Japanese Ryoichi Funai.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez, ranked No. 14 in the IBF, is fighting the biggest fight of his career.

The 30-year-old native of Santiago has been patiently waiting for his shot at a world title. He has fought all but one of his fights in his home country of Chile.

His biggest win was against a 44-year-old former world champion Jose Luis Lazarte. He also lost to former world champion Paul Butler and promising prospect Andrew Moloney.

Ancajas, one of the just four world champions from the Philippines, is 31-1-2 with 21 knockouts, while Gonzalez is 31-2 with eight knockouts. (EKA)
