Solon: Human body types: Mesomorphs

THE mesomorph is a human body type that’s characterized by greater than average muscular development. The extreme mesomorph has a square, massive head; broad shoulders, muscular chest and shoulders, large heart, heavily muscled arms and legs; and minimal body fat. Mesomorphs tend to develop muscle easily. When we think of mesomorphs we think of bodybuilders and weightlifters.

Physical activity

Because mesomorphs gain build muscle easily, mesomorphs gravitate toward strength and power-based sports. They enjoy lifting weights because they excel at it. Mesomorphs gain and retain muscle mass very well.

Mesomorph nutrition

Mesomorphs typically do best on a mixed diet consisting of balanced carbohydrates, proteins and fats. A macronutrient split of 40 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent protein and 30 percent fat works well for them.

Most people are not strictly mesomorphs, endomorphs or ectomorphs. Most are mostly a combination. Notice basketball players who are long but muscular, or some who may look chubby but actually have muscle mass.

Our body types also change over the years. Someone who may be an endomorph now can diet and train hard to transition into becoming mesomorphic; and an ectomorphic individual can eat smart and work hard in the gym to become more mesomorphic. While our genes determine how we may look or how our structure will be, training and nutrition still has a huge influence over our physique.
