Initao hero cop laid to rest, awarded 2 medals

POLICE Senior Master Sergeant Jason Magno, the police officer who shielded civilians from a grenade explosion inside a community college, was laid to rest on Saturday, December 7, at San Pedro Cemetery in Initao, Misamis Oriental.

Two days before his burial, President Rodrigo Duterte visited his wake and awarded the hero cop with the posthumous medal of valor and the Order of Lapu-Lapu Magalong Medal.

The PNP Medal of Valor is the highest award of the Philippine National Police, given to any police officers who have "performed in action a deed of personal bravery and self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty so conspicuous as to distinguish himself clearly above his comrades in the performance of more than ordinary hazardous service."

Meanwhile, the Order of Lapu-Lapu medal is awarded to officials, government personnel, and private citizens "in recognition of invaluable or extraordinary service in relation to a campaign or advocacy of the President."

In a video tribute to Magno, Initao town chief Police Captain Arlene Ranario described the fallen cop as not only a dedicated police officer but also a kind-hearted and humble person respected by his colleagues.

His son Jayvee, said his father always remind him and his siblings to love each other but also to be independent and strive hard.

For his wife Vivian, Magno was a husband who values her decisions for their family.
