Ancajas wins; Tapales loses in 11

JERWIN Ancajas defended his belt for the eighth time, while compatriot Marlon Tapales failed in his bid for a world title in international fights last Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019.

Ancajas stopped Chilean challenger Miguel Gonzalez in the sixth round at the Auditiorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico.

Ancajas unleashed a flurry of unanswered punches that stunned Gonzalez.

Ancajas defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight belt for the eighth time and is now a world champion for three years.

The 27-year-old Ancajas improved to 32-1-2 with 22 knockouts, while Gonzalez dropped to 31-3 with eight knockouts.

More than 2,000 miles to the north, Tapales lost his interim IBF super bantamweight title fight with Ryosuke Iwasa via an 11th-round stoppage at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Tapales was dropped in the third round in what was clearly a headbutt by Iwasa. However, in the 11th round, Iwasa caught Tapales with a solid right straight that sent him down near the ropes.

The 27-year-old Tapales beat the count but he was still wobbly and referee Shada Murdaugh waved it off in the 1:09 mark of the 11th round.

Iwasa was up ahead in all judges’ scorecards and the only chance of Tapales winning was by knockout.

Tapales, the former World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion, fell to 33-3 with 16 knockouts, while Iwasa improved to 27-3 with 17 knockouts and now has the right to challenge regular IBF champion Daniel Roman. (EKA)
