UP Cebu holds forum on Yolanda

THE University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu in partnership with the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia organized a forum to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Yolanda disaster.

The event was entitled “(Re)Constructing Yolanda: Philosophical, Sociological and Literary Perspectives.” It was held at the UP Cebu AVR 1 on Nov. 13, 2019, six years after the super typhoon ravaged Visayas, mostly the provinces in the eastern part.

It aimed to reconstruct one’s understanding of Yolanda, highlighting the competing narratives of what it means to be built back better and provoke a critical re-imagining of disasters beyond the event itself.

Forum speakers were Wendyl Luna (UNSW doctor of philosophy (PhD) Candidate for Philosophy), Professor Kaira Zoe Cañete (UP Cebu assistant professor and UNSW PhD candidate for Development Studies), Marie Rose Arong (UP Cebu Communication and Creative Program coordinator) and Daniel Hempel (UNSW educational developer).
