SKATEBOARDERS want an audience with Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella to ask for an alternative site for their skatepark, a promise that the City Government has yet to deliver.

This, as Cebuana Margielyn Didal and Cebuano Daniel Ledermann won gold medals in skateboarding events in the 30th Southeast Asian Games. The Philippines continues to lead the medal tally with 98 golds, 72 silvers and 82 bronzes.

In a letter from the Common Ground Skate Lifestyle Store Inc. representative Kaz Onozawa and Cebu City community representative Peter Lindgreen to the City Council, dated Oct. 22, 2019, the group is requesting a dialogue with Labella and other concerned officials to discuss the establishment of a temporary site where they can practice their skateboarding skills.

“We would like to request for a dialogue with you (Labella) and the concerned public officials and agencies to explore other temporary sites that may be suitable for the designation of an area for skateboarding activities until we all come up with a better plan that will benefit the government, the people of Cebu City and the community altogether,” read a part of the letter.

The group said they understand why the project has been delayed since the original proposed area for the skatepark, which is the back of Fort San Pedro, is inside a heritage zone.

There has been no major development since the groundbreaking took place in December last year, the group said.

The mayor, for his part, said he heard complaints that the proposed site was not suitable for skateboarding.

Labella said he will invite the skateboarding community to visit him at his office to discuss the matter and find a more suitable site for the skatepark.

Labella said he still has to talk to City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. about the project since the City will have to allocate at least P15 million for the skatepark’s construction.

Minnie Osmeña, sister of former mayor Tomas Osmeña, had promised to donate P5 million to the project.

“We will find out with the city administrator on how we can realize it (the budget)... it would be great if we can provide a skatepark to the skateboarders,” said Labella. (JJL)
