BACOLOR -- Mayoralty aspirant and Barangay Cabalantian village chief Jomar Hizon led the formal opening of the Barangay Balas Basketball Tournament at Bulaon Resettlement here, Saturday.
Hizon said the event will feature some 12 teams that will battle with each other in weeks of basketball competition.
The teams were formed from existing youth organizations and groups in the area.
The competition aims to make closer the ties of the youth sector from the different places of the resettlement and Bacolor town.
“During the duration of the tournament, we want to see the unity and camaraderie of the Bacolorenos,” Hizon said, adding that he personally looked into helping the uniform and organizational needs of the teams.
“The tournament will promote and develop social awareness in sports through integral community development down to barangay level by fostering fellowship, team building, camaraderie, and physical fitness among players,” Hizon said.
During the opening ceremony, Hizon emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition, exercise, and optimistic attitude.
"The games will showcase the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork among us. It will help us gain more friends than enemies," Hizon said.
Cash prizes and trophies await the winners of the events.
