THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc (DCCCII) is seeing the potential of mangoes and avocados in the export market.

DCCCII executive vice-president John Carlo Tria said the Southeast Asian countries are among the areas that may be interested in these fruits.

“I always consider mango as a very good export crop because most of our mangoes here is at par, if not better than any other mango varieties in Southeast Asia,” he said during a press conference on Monday, December 9.

He cited that with the recent opening of a food business in Singapore which uses mango as the main ingredient, there would be a demand for the fruit which is being grown in Davao del Sur.

Tria also bared that other countries consider avocado as a superfood.

“Avocado is a salad vegetable already. It is not just a fruit. So, a lot of people, even in Southeast Asia, like avocado sa salad. In other words, it is becoming a popular table fruit and salad ingredient,” he said.

He added that currently, there is no dedicated farm for avocado but some backyard growers are doing efforts to increase its yield such as in the area of Calinan.

“Tungod niini, atong paningkamutan nga mulapad o mulambo ang mga merkado para sa ingon ani nga mga products at the same time matabangan ang atong mga local producers and farmers to find new strong markets para sa ilang mga produkto,” he said.

Aside from business-matching, Tria also added that the Chamber will also initiate interventions to help farmers of these crops increase their production.

Tria is set to begin his post as the DCCCII as president next year.
