Police file complaints vs. man with fake kidnap post on FB

THE police have filed complaints against the 21-year-old student from Danao City who posted false information on Facebook about his alleged kidnapping.

Brigs Granada Alvaro is facing complaints for violations of Presidential Decree 90 or Unlawful Rumor-Mongering and spreading false information in relation to Republic Act 1175 or the Anti-Cyber Crime Law.

Alvaro posted on his Facebook page in early December that unidentified men in a white van had abducted him in Danao City. The post has been deleted.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Maribel Getigan, chief of the Danao City police station, said Alvaro faces imprisonment for six to 12 years if proven guilty.

Getigan said they pitied the student but they had to file the complaints at the Danao City Prosecutor’s Office to teach him a lesson not to cause panic in social media.

He said it is up to the prosecutor whether to elevate the complaints to the court.

Getigan said they have a strong case against Alvaro.

“There are a lot of fake news that cause panic. One of the reasons we filed a case is that we want them to be responsible when posting such information,” said Getigan. (AYB, RSR)
