Briones: Mall outburst

I DON’T know her whole story so I should hold off judgment.

The fact that she was carrying a baby when she lashed out at a promodizer in one of the malls in Cebu City last Saturday night, Dec. 7, 2019, might hold a clue to her mental state.

Then again, I could be wrong.

A good friend with a medical background said he didn’t see any “conceited arrogance” in the actions of Medelina Yamazaki, just “irrational neurosis.”

Well, here’s what the videos of that incident show us.

A woman loudly berates a saleslady in an aisle stand. She throws stuff at the latter not once, but three times, hitting the other girl smack in the face. Yamazaki could be heard screaming, “I will kill you!” or something like that.

Her attack was relentless. And very loud. She didn’t stop when a crowd had gathered around her. Not even when a security personnel from the mall belatedly stood between her and the victim. What kept her from lunging at Fabilar was one brave woman who gently nudged her away from her intended victim.

And while this was happening, people took out their smartphones and recorded the incident. Some approached. I thought they would help, but they didn’t. They only probably wanted to hear more clearly what was going on. The rest gawked, unbelieving at what was unraveling in front of them. They watched while Fabillar was verbally and physically abused by Yamazaki.

According to Staff Sgt. Enrique Manolong, investigator of the Mabolo Police Station where Yamazaki was detained last Sunday after her arrest, the native of Negros Occidental blew her top after Fabillar told her not to touch their humidifier.

I don’t know how Fabillar delivered her admonition since that wasn’t caught on camera, but that was what triggered the outburst.

“Ang iyang (Yamazaki) giingon kay ‘customer is always right.’ Wala kuno’y magbuot niya kung iya kining iyabo kay iya ra daw bayran. Bisan unsaon daw niya, bisag iyabo niya tanan kay kaya daw niya bayaran,” Manolong quoted Yamazaki.

“What she said was ‘customer is always right.’ No one could stop her if she spilled the contents of the humidifier because she was going to pay for it anyway. Even if she spilled all its contents it didn’t matter since she could afford to pay for it.”

The police officer said he tried to convince Yamazaki to apologize to Fabillar but Yamazaki got angry at him instead. She told him he had no business giving her advice.

So Yamazaki might just be depressed, as my friend put it, but it didn’t change the fact that she refused to express remorse. Of course, that may soon change now that she is facing a battery of charges at the fiscal’s office.
