THE gold medal run of the Gilas Pilipinas in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games has inspired Cebu’s local standouts to reach new heights.
Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate Most Valuable Player Shaquille Imperial of the Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras said he followed the Gilas’ perfect run through the biennial meet.
He said that with his collegiate career nearing its end, he is hoping to one day get that opportunity to play for flag and country.
“Well, as an aspiring player, I am beyond ecstatic and proud of what they have accomplished. I hope one day I’d also be able to have that kind of victory for our country,” said the high-scoring wingman who helped lead the Cobras to the Cesafi title this year with a rousing win over the University of the Visayas.
University of Cebu’s lead assistant coach Rocky Alcoseba said he was impressed with the performance with this latest iteration of the Gilas men’s basketball team. However, he mentioned that the key lies in sustainability as well as preparation, if the team wants to become successful at more prestigious tournaments.
“It’s a good stepping stone for the Gilas program which is on a reboot. If we want to win in quality tournaments that have elite teams, we should be consistent with the practices and the system we should run should fit the personnel that we have,” said the young coach. “Preparation is the key so the PBA should come together and give this Gilas team the best possible position to succeed.”
Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas meanwhile, said that the win was the team’s the lose especially with the all-pro squad that it cobbled up for this particular competition.
“It was our gold medal to lose. But they stayed the course and finished number one. Congrats Gilas and especially to all Cebuano athletes,” said th politician and sportsman Gullas. (JNP)
