Pelayo: Buying loyalty

INDEED, it’s the season of giving, buying.... and bribing? Empty the pockets, clear them from old receipts and coin change and make a big space for the incoming red envelopes, hongbao or Ang Pau, no matter how it is pronounced. In these modern days, if a person is in an important position, may it be appointed or elected, there’s a possibility that he’s in for a treat this season of giving with a sleight of hand.

And so elated, these public officials who received envelopes containing notes with images of past presidents and national heroes courtesy of “yorme” and Cong (not King Kong) during the so called gift giving. Reiterated many times that it’s a gift and not a bribe in exchange of loyalty when in this season of joy start to ask their conscience with a question of value.

According to American author and journalist William Safire, bribery is permissible only to the extent of something that can be eaten or smoked in a single day. Does that explain why so many officials gain weight and get respiratory disease at the same time?

But while some try to use their wealth in an attempt to buy allegiance, they do not understand that loyalty cannot be bought. True leaders are not for sale. And they never forget.

Remembering Fredie Uy So

My heartfelt condolences to the family of my friend, Fredie So, who passed away recently. He was known by many as a philanthropist, a very humble person despite his success in his business, and a great friend. During my time in Angeles City LGU under the Pamintuan administration, Kuya Fredie So and his friends from Fil-Chi Chamber of Commerce were consistently very supportive to the projects that they thought would be better for the city and enhance the services in public health, education for the underprivileged, support to local police, and countless more. Surely, you will be missed.
