FROM P15 down to P10 million.

The Department of Education – Baguio City Division has submitted a reduced budget for the city’s hosting of the 2020 2020 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa) .

The revised budget was submitted to the city for consideration as the City Council continued its deliberation on the P2.255-billion budget of the city government for 2020.

Dep-Ed Baguio earlier requested the city government to appropriate some P15.5 million from the city’s annual budget to defray the expenses that will be incurred by the city in the hosting Caraa.

City officials earlier questioned the expenses on the perks, giveaway items, souvenir items for concerned education and city government officials.

Caraa will be staged in various venues in the city from Feb. 17-21 next year.

The bulk of the funds from the city government will be used to prepare the different public schools where the athletes and sports officials from the eight delegations from the region will be billeted while some of the funds will be utilized by the organizers for the preparation of the different playing venues around the city for the convenience of athletes and sports officials joining the different individual and team games.

Baguio hosted the event for three straight years from 2015-2017, until Abra, boasting of its new rubberized track, took over in 2018 and Apayao in February this year after its sports facilities had been refurbished and the new tartan tracks installed.

DepEd-Car has already started to look for host of the meet’s staging in 2021 and 2022 as well.

Officials of DepEd–Car said they want to identify the host local government unit early to ensure a well-prepared venue and billeting of schools for athletes and the delegation.

DepEd-Car said bidders should ensure they have the facility at par with international standards for the various sports events that are accessible and free to the public.

Close to 7,000 athletes and sports officials will be arriving in the city in the different individual and team events during the weeklong regional athletic meet. (SunStar Baguio)
