Ateneo blanks DBTC in aboitiz cup

THE Ateneo de Cebu Magis barged to the lead in Group A of the Boys 14 division with a 3-0 thumping of erstwhile leader Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) at the Don Bosco Magone field on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019.

Tyrone Nierre got the first goal in the 18th minute and added his second two minutes before the break for a 2-0 lead. Jacob Wayne Almendras doused DBTC’s comeback efforts with another strike just seven minutes into the second half.

The win assured Ateneo of a spot in the semifinal round with a game to spare as it now has a perfect nine points in three matches, while DBTC A dropped to second place after staying at six points.

In Group B, DBTC B and Cebu United improved their chances of advancing to the semifinal round after nailing their third straight wins. DBTC B routed Ateneo de Cebu, 12-1, while Cebu United got a win the easy way after the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown failed to show up for their match.

Both DBTC B and Cebu United have nine points in three matches, with the Bosconians ahead only on goal difference with 15 to Cebu United’s 12.

On the other hand, Abellana National School (ANS) also kept its semifinal hopes alive after nailing its first win of the season, 2-0, against Giuseppe FC. John Vincent Betinol got the first goal two minutes after the break while Shan Rich David Fat got the insurance goal in the 58th.

ANS now has three points in two matches, taking third on goal difference with fellow three-pointers Giuseppe and Ateneo. However, ANS has a match at hand as both Giuseppe and Ateneo have played thrice.

In the Boys 16 division, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu zoomed ahead early against ANS, 4-2, for its third straight win in Group B.

Francis Eugene Matugas struck twice in the 27th and 50th minutes, while Christopher Ozawa added two more in the 56th and 72nd minutes to make it a comfortable 4-0 lead. ANS scored twice, thanks to Francis Yosores and Francis Vercide but it was too late as they suffered their first loss and dropped to second at six points.

Ateneo is first at nine points in three matches.

In the Boys U18 division, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Basak Campus fought back against KNF Ferraren, 2-1, for its second straight win in Group B. John Cyril Ybañez gave KNF Ferraren the lead in the 17th before Angelo Colina got the equalizer in the 34th. The prolific Dustiy Rey Ramirez gave USJ-R the lead 10 minutes from time to secure the lead in the group at six points.

KNF and DBTC B both have three points, while Cebu International School and the University of San Carlos have zero.

In Group A, DBTC A also got its second win in style with a 5-0 rout of Ateneo B. Vaugh Pacaña gave the home team the lead in the 11th and 16th minutes, while CJ Songalia added his in the 23rd. Uriel Villacarlos and Kai Amirul completed the rout with second half goals. (ML)
