Baguio groups back Panday Sining artists

MEMBERS of the Baguio Writers Group (BWG) have joined calls to condemn the arrest of Panday Sining members in Manila.

In a statement, the Baguio based group said that they demand the remaining young detainees, Jeanne Vaughn Quijano,24, Joven Laura, 24 and Mikhail Collado, 18 — be released immediately. The detainees were said to have suffered enough after police authorities harshly manhandled them for expressing their right to free expression and imprisoned them at the Manila Police Headquarters.

A clamor has been rising from artist groups in the country for the release and condemnation of the act of arresting the Manila based artists.

Reports claim plainclothes policemen illegally arrested the artists, among them, a minor, taken to the Manila Police District (MPD).

“We in the BWG, believe that when traditional outlets for expressing one’s opinions on the injustices prevalent in our society are limited, people have the right, duty and option to find creative means to release their thoughts and feelings in hopes of change taking place. Panday Sining was doing just that as committed artists when they were arrested,” the BWG statement read.

The young artists came from participating the recent Bonifacio Day protest, where they painted graffiti with words “Presyo Ibaba, Sahod Itaas!” and “Makatwiran ang Maghimagsik!” among others.

Panday Sining members were freed after posting bail, nine days after they were arrested.

On December 6, the Manila City Council passed a resolution declaring the group persona non grata in the city. Baguio groups, Sulong Likha and Pedantic Pedestrians likewise backed the Panday Sining artists.
