Espedilla: Removing heavy metals from life

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

I hope you are doing well. I am Sanchee. I am so anxious when I learned lately that heavy metals are found in our waters, consumer products, foods, and places that we go to everyday, which have damaging effects in our body. Can you please tell me ways to remove them from my life?

Thanks and happy holidays!

Dear Sanchee of Tagum,

Oh, dear, you are so right that heavy metals are found in our water, consumer products, foods and other everyday places. The truth is, they are practically, part of modern living. It’s even so difficult to avoid metals like lead, cadmium, mercury or aluminum - which are not technically heavy metals, because they tend to be soft, but, nonetheless, they have damaging effects on our body.

Yes, they are hard to remove, but, there are some ways to eliminate them from you - day to day.

1. Switch to aluminum-free products. The next time you buy deodorants, make sure they are free from aluminum. Just read the label.

2. Bake aluminum-free. When the label in your baking powder doesn’t indicate whether it has aluminum, then, assume it does.

3. Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking a pack of cigarettes a day exposes you to ten times more cadmium than your body can handle.

4. Filter your drinking water. Tap water usually has cadmium and lead. And this is especially true, if you live in an older home with lead pipes.

5. Don’t spray. No to pesticides on your lawn, flowers or indoors since they may contain cadmium, which can be related to blood pressure issues and kidney damage. Use citronella instead. You can plant them as well.
