JTR secures 2nd straight win in Mayor Labella Christmas league

JOURNEY to Recovery (JTR) collected its second straight win with a 98-80 bashing of the Siargao Waveriders in the Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella Christmas Inter-Commercial Basketball League at the Cebu City Sports Institute on Monday evening, December 16, 2019.

In the second half, JTR broke the game wide open as they turned a slim six-point halftime lead, 46-40, into a double-digit advantage that they would hold until the game’s final buzzer.

Talented guard Steve Castro led the way for JTR as he racked up 29 points and four assists. San Beda Red Lion forward JB Bahio added 15 points and 10 boards while University of the Visayas standout Jancork Cabahug had 12 points, seven boards and five assists.

Siargao dropped to 0-2 in this weeklong pocket tournament.

Meanwhile, the Fighter 50 Wine outlasted KCS Lapu-Lapu in overtime, 106-104.

Manila Stars forward Marvin Hayes led Fighter 50 Wine with 25 points, while Isaiah Hontiveros, the son of Cebuano basketball great, Dondon Hontiveros, showed he could hang with the big boys as he scored 18 points and grabbed six boards. Fighter 50 Wine, improved to 2-0.

Shaquille Imperial, the Cesafi’s reigning Most Valuable Player award-winner, canned seven three-pointers en route to tallying 28 points on top of five rebounds and four assists. Another collegiate standout, Gabriel Cometa of UV, stood out with his 16 points.

The ASPA Frameworks also bounced back from their opening-day loss with a 95-87 victory over the SG ARQ Builders. Crafty point guard Russel Moneva was on fire all game long as he torched his defenders for 39 points on a super efficient 17- of-24 shooting clip from the field. He also had four assists and three steals.

UV wingman Jiesel Tarrosa also had a triple-double with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to help ASPA even up their record at 1-1.

SG ARQ, which got 22 points from National University ace John Galinato, fell to 1-1 as well. (SunStar Cebu)
