IT’S that time of the year again when colorful decorations are hung and sparkling lights lit up with holiday melodies to match the merry atmosphere. It is also the best time to be with family and loved ones. But how do people celebrate when their call of duty must come first before anything else?

While many are busy preparing for their merrymaking and wondering what meal to cook for the Christmas Eve, the country’s security forces and law enforcers are also busy ensuring the safety of the citizens.

Armed Forces of the Philippines’s (AFP’s) 10th Infantry Division (ID) Division Public Affairs Office (DPAO) Captain Jerry Lamosa shared with SunStar Davao that they have already laid out plans ahead to make sure that they still feel the season despite the full alert status. Soldiers celebrate in advance through their early parties.

Upon signing up to join the security forces, they have already anticipated that such a scenario will come and there is a special occasion that they have to miss to protect the country against threats. Christmas is considered a critical season and their presence is highly needed.

Some troops, especially those assigned in combat operations in far-flung areas, have to celebrate their holiday running after the state’s enemies considering now that the ceasefire is not in place.

Lamosa added when an emergency comes, instead of spending on parties, they gather their funds to give to those in need.

He explained that the personnel are still given Christmas break but not simultaneously especially for those involved in focus military operations.

But of course, when there is a security situation and full attendance is needed, they are mandated to perform their sworn duty.

The advancement of technology has also helped ease their personnel's longing for their families despite the distance through video calls.

For their part, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has earlier launched its annual gift-giving activity for the underprivileged children in the city dubbed as “Pamaskong Handog Alay sa Kabataan.”

Policemen in different stations under DCPO went to communities to give gifts such as stuffed toys and food packs. They were also entertained by mascots during the program as an effort to bring in the children closer to policemen and to lessen their fear.
