TORIL-BASED Guevarra Law Office of Davao City finished third at the close of the Senator Emmanuel D. Pacquiao’s birthday random chess team tournament held at the Robinson’s Place General Santos on December 17.

The team, composed of arena grand master (AGM) Jimzon Trangia, Perkins Bayron and Alfred Moulic and managed by lawyer Jong Guevarra, tallied a total of 13.5 points in the random chess event.

Chesson-Cagayan de Oro B trio of Basilio Pandan, Romeo Canino and Jovy Edades emerged champion with 14.5 points while Team Bomgew, made 14 points to grab the runner-up honors. Dabawenyo Reynaldo Quiñonez formed part of the Bomgew team whose playing team manager Norman Longjas is from Bohol.

Guevarra’s second team, Jardin del Roca, placed 29th in the chessfest that awarded cash prizes of P50,000 to the champion, P30,000 to the second placer and P20,000 to the third placer.

His team was fifth last year wherein the standard chess was played unlike the random chess conducted this year.

“The pieces in the first rank will be randomly placed based on the starting position that was selected by raffle. There are 960 starting position,” Guevarra said, adding that random chess is more difficult than standard since it’s difficult to position the pieces in the opening.

Chessers from all over the country thanked Senator Pacquaio, who himself is a chess player, for his continued support to the sport.
