City of Naga inmates move back to old jail

CLOSE to 500 inmates of the City of Naga Jail in Barangay Naalad were able to return to their previous jail facility after staying at the Cebu City Jail Female Dormitory for more than a year.

A total of 463 male and 39 female inmates were transferred back to the City of Naga Jail on Saturday morning, Dec. 21, 2019.

The inmates were temporarily transferred to Cebu City back in November last year after the City of Naga Jail was recommended to be vacated when tension cracks were found there after the 2018 deadly landslide that struck Barangay Tina-an.

City of Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong said it was a mining engineer of the contractor they hired to do the slope stabilization, who certified that the area surrounding the jail is already safe.

“Actually, wala g’yod ingon nga nahuman g’yod fully but more or less mga 80 to 90 percent na human. Sa side sa jail jud mura’g gi-certifyan na sad nga safe na,” Chiong told SunStar Cebu.

Asked about the cost of the slope stabilization, Chiong said the government did not spend a centavo.

However, the total cost was estimated to have totaled to around P11 million, he added.

In exchange, Chiong said the City hired the contractor who agreed to do the work as long as it was allowed to keep the waste material it hauled during the slope stabilization operations and use it at its own disposal. / WBS
