Cayetano gets highest approval, trust ratings, Pulse Asia survey says

HOUSE Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano emerged as the biggest winner among the top four national government officials covered by a recent Pulse Asia survey, having jumped the highest in both approval and trust ratings since September 2019.

A press release from the Cayetano camp cited the poll conducted from December 3 to 8, 2019, wherein the Speaker’s approval rating was 80 percent, a whopping 16 percent increase from his September rating of 64 percent.

Cayetano's trust rating also jumped to 76 percent, 14 percentage points more than the 62 percent rating he obtained only three months before.

But that’s not all.

In terms of ratings, Cayetano also overtook Vice President Leni Robredo, who is the lone national government official with measly approval and trust ratings.

Cayetano’s trust rating of 76 percent was 23 percentage points ahead of Robredo’s 53 percent, and his whopping 80 percent approval rating was 22 percentage points more than the vice president’s 58 percent.

The Pulse Asia results in favor of Cayetano are not at all surprising.

The young but already-experienced government official has done a lot of good recently, as he was wont to do in his many years in government.

The House of Representatives of the 18th Congress under his leadership has been one of the most productive, if not the most productive, in the country’s history.

Less than a month after he took the helm, the House approved on third and final reading House Bill 1026, which seeks to increase the excise tax on alcohol, vape products and tobacco.

Then there’s the country’s very successful hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Cayetano took on the challenge of organizing the biennial sports event as chair of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee and passed with flying colors.

Under his leadership, the Phisgoc was given a Special Excellence Award by Sports Industry Awards Asia in recognition of the committee’s excellent job of hosting over 500 sporting events participated in by over 5,000 athletes from different parts of Southeast Asia.

The grandiose SEA Games opening ceremonies at the Philippine Arena took social media by storm, with Filipinos and foreigners alike hailing the event as one of the best opening ceremonies in the history of the games.

During the 30th SEA Games, Team Philippines also emerged as the overall champion, with its haul of 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronze medals, for a total of 387 medals. (PR)
