'Ursula' intensifies into a typhoon; 6 areas under signal no. 3

TROPICAL Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 has been raised over six areas in the country, as Tropical Storm "Ursula" (international name Phanfone) intensified into a typhoon on Tuesday afternoon, said the weather stated bureau.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Typhoon Ursula was located at 95 kilometers (km) east of Guiuan, Easter Samar, as of 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 24.

The typhoon is moving west as 20 kilometers per hour (kph) and is packing maximum winds of up to 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

"Ursula" is expected to make landfall over Borongan-Guiuan area between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 24.

With this, destructive typhoon force winds will begin to affect provinces of Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Camotes Islands were placed under signal number 3 (121-170 kph winds prevailing or expected in 18 hours).

Areas under signal number 2 with damaging gale to storm-force winds (61-120 km/h winds prevailing or expected in 24 hours) are: Southern portion of Quezon (Mulanay, San Narciso, San Andres, San Francisco), Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island, Romblon, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate including Burias and Ticao Islands.

Also extreme northern Cebu including Bantayan (Bantayan, Madridejos, Santa Fe, Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remigio, Bogo City, Tabogon, Tabuelan, Borbon, San Francisco, Poro, Tudela, Pilar), northeastern Iloilo (Carles, Balasan, Estancia, Batad, San Dionisio, Sara, Concepcion, Lemery, Ajuy), northern Antique (Libertad, Pandan, Sebaste, Culasi, Tibiao), Capiz, Aklan, Southern Leyte and extreme Northern Negros Occidental (Enrique B. Magalona, Victorias, Manapla, Cadiz, Sagay, Escalante, Toboso), and Dinagat Islands.

Meanwhile, moderated to strong winds will be affecting areas under signal number 1 (30-60 km/h winds prevailing or expected in 36 hours): Bulacan, Bataan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, the rest of Quezon, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, northern Palawan (Linapacan, El Nido, Taytay, Araceli, Dumaran, San Vicente, Roxas), Calamian Islands, and Cuyo Islands.

Also, the rest of northern Cebu (Carmen, Asturias, Tuburan, Catmon, Sogod), Central Cebu (Aloguinsan, Carcar City, Pinamungahan, San Fernando, Naga City, Toledo City, Minglanilla, Balamban, Talisay City, Cebu City, Cordova, Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela, Danao City), northeastern Bohol (Inabanga, Danao, Dagohoy, Pilar, Guindulman, Anda, Candijay, Alicia, Buenavista, Jetafe, Talibon, Trinidad, Bien Unido, San Miguel, Ubay, Mabini, Pres. Carlos P. Garcia), the rest of Antique, the rest of Iloilo, Guimaras.

Other areas under northern Negros Occidental (Bacolod City, Bago City, Calatrava, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Binalbagan, Hinigaran, Isabela, Murcia, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Salvador Benedicto, San Carlos City, San Enrique, Silay City, Talisay City, Valladolid), and northern Negros Orienta (Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, Jimalalud, La Libertad, Vallehermoso), and Surigao del Norte including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands.

Typhoon Ursula is expected to be at 65 km Southwest of Romblon, Romblon by Wednesday morning.

Rough sea conditions will prevail starting Tuesday off the eastern seaboards of the country; Tuesday afternoon or evening in Southern Luzon and Visayas; Wednesday afternoon off the western seaboards of Southern Luzon. Sea travel is risky in these areas. (SunStar Philippines)
