LEAVE it to Kia to end the year with a little tease. Last November, the Korean automotive manufacturer released a preview of its latest mid-sized sedan, the all-new K5.
If the K5 does not ring any bells, that’s because it was under a different name—Optima—in the Philippine market. This is more than just a sneak peek of a new model; it’s also a first glance into Kia’s exciting new design direction entering the new decade.
The K5 marks the debut of Kia’s new “Tiger Face” design, the latest version of the brand’s “Tiger Nose” design philosophy. The reworked fascia features a strapping new look for the grille and sleeker headlamps. The exteriors of the K5 are an impressive combination of smooth and sharp, rendering a distinctly futuristic look.
Engine type will vary per country or region: North America will have a 1.6-liter T-GDi and a 2.5-liter T-Gdi, while other markets will have a 2.0-liter MPI. These will come in three types of transmission: six-speed, eight-speed automatic transmission or eight-speed dual clutch automatic. It’ll also come in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
This sedan is a tad larger, 50 mm longer and 25 mm wider, than its predecessor, but 20 mm lower for a look that emulates one of a sports vehicle. The wheels vary in sizes, between 16 and 19 inches are available in three finishes: gloss black, dark gray and light gray.
The K5 is set for release in Korea before the year ends. As of writing, there are no news yet on whether this will be released in the country or not. However, with Kia now under the Ayala Automotive Group, which released a few surprises in the past year, this isn’t far from happening.
