Pagasa: Warm weather expected until New Year Pagasa

EXPECT warm weather and less rain starting Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019 until the start of the New Year, said an official of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Al Quiblat, acting Pagasa Visayas bureau chief, told SunStar Cebu that following typhoon Ursula’s departure from the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday, Dec. 28, the weather in Cebu is expected to be sunny and warm until Jan. 1.

But while it will be sunny and warm until the New Year, Quiblat warned that “isolated thunderstorms” will be felt in some parts of Cebu.

Aside from localized thunderstorms, no unusual weather disturbance will be felt in Cebu and the rest of the Visayas as Pagasa has monitored no signs of a low pressure area outside the PAR, Quiblat said.

However, Quiblat said after the new year, cold weather could return due to winds coming from the north.

The weather just before New Year would be a positive development after what happened last Christmas when various areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were severely affected after typhoon Ursula brought heavy rains and wind across the two regions.

As of Thursday, Dec. 26, the number of people who perished after typhoon Ursula hit has reached 24, and around 65,000 people were affected.

In northern Cebu, at least two towns, namely Medellin and Daanbantayan, bore the brunt of Ursula’s lashing last Christmas. (JCT)
