Top stories of 2019: Investment scams, killings, justice for 57

INVESTMENT scams, the death of a Philippine Military Academy cadet from hazing injuries and shooting incidents that targeted town mayors lead the list of SunStar Philippines’ top stories in 2019 based on page views.

Stories that were not among the top 10, but are worth mentioning because of their impact were the Senate investigation into the Good Conduct Time Allowance scheme which morphed into an inquiry on ninja cops and the conviction of three Ampatuan brothers and 40 others for the 2009 Maguindanao massacre.

A Grade 12 pupil's father accepted the medal in behalf of his deceased daughter who had graduated with high honors. The 18-year-old student died of dengue fever three weeks before her graduation ceremony.

San Fernando Mayor Lakambini Reluya and her five companions, including her husband Ricardo “Nonoy” Reluya Jr., were aboard a van on their way to San Fernando town from Cebu City when they were ambushed. Lakambini survived but not her husband and two other companions in the van.

Clarin mayor shot dead a day after arrest

A day after he was arrested for allegedly mauling a massage parlor attendant in Cebu City, Mayor David Navarro of Clarin, Misamis Occidental was shot dead. The mayor was being escorted by policemen in a police car that was part of a convoy on the way to inquest proceedings at the Cebu City Prosecutor's Office when the gunmen attacked.

A girl was sexually assaulted by four of her male classmates. A video, taken by one of the men, showed how a classmate molested the girl who was unconscious while seated on the backseat of a car.

A 19-year-old woman collapsed while attending a concert. Medical teams in the area were able to provide assistance and rush her to the hospital, however, she passed away a few hours after. The cause was believed to be from ingesting a party drug.
