Beauty, fashion trends in 2020

NEW Year, new look. Or is it?

Sunstar Davao gathered local established fashion designers and beauty stylists' perception on the trend in clothing, accessories, and make up for this year. Find out what they see for the year 2020.

CLOTHING

Emi Englis

Taking it from stylists around the world, 2020 will have exciting trends to watch out for. Pantone has already proclaimed Classic Blue as color of the year. Genderless pegs will have the best for everyone, bend or straight.

For fashion, retro will have a modern re-edition and expect more eye-popping colors this year, from 80’s bright neons to colored leathers.

Volume on shoulders and hips will continue with puff sleeves and peplums.

Lengthening optics like vertical and diagonal lines will also be popular, and so with polka dots mixed with prints or with bold colors.

Prints and patterns alongside silhouettes and details from retro 70’s like wide lapels, double breasted styles, and flared hemlines with bell-bottom pants will make a strong comeback while tie dye will be more subtle.

Deconstructed three-piece suits paired with not the usual pieces like Bermuda shorts and knitted tops will also be on the rise.

Folk art will also bring in crochet, fringes, florals and feathers in modern dimensions.

All these eclectic vibe seem to signal brewing excitement and hope. It's very constant and consistent to the color of the year.

I think that even as we enter a new decade, fashion trends seem to mirror those of the previous decades like in the 70's to the 90's. Oversized shirts are reappearing, fanny packs, short shorts for men, et cetera.

Modern adaptations of traditional costumes such as the barong and the Maria Clara are also becoming popular.

Overall, I think that the fashion trend for 2020 will draw much inspiration from the previous decades but with subtle changes to make it look fresh and new to the eyes.

Also, the Pantone color of the year is Classic Blue so we will most likely be seeing pieces in this color.

I think the trend on contemporary ethnic fashion will still continue.

People nowadays would want to purchase something that is ethical, slow, and sustainable fashion. People would want to shop with brands whose values reflect their own.

MAKEUP

Count in gender fluid products and HBO Series Euphoria’s Jules character-inspired make-up and the Rabanne futuristic-referred high eyeliner in bright neons.

We’ve seen a lot of extremes over the past few years, and I’m starting to see that “neutralize” but at the same time keep the distinct characteristics of the trends.

It’s something I would describe as a retro-minimalist approach to the looks we’ve seen in the past.

People are becoming more and more busy and have less and less time for long makeup routines. Even for makeup lovers, the more practical, efficient but impactful, is in.

So pairing up skin care with other products results into an interesting mix of styles that will allow different personalities to come out and be expressed through makeup.

From extreme feather light brows to a more structured (and also probably thinner) but still natural looking brows. From extreme glass (almost shiny) skin base craze to a more subtle, still dewy cream skin.

Still clean base, away from the heavy contouring of the past. Minimalist accented looks using neon pops here and there, bright eye liners, floating cut crease liners, colorful/shaded mascaras and use of crystals and gems (not altogether!)

70s style smokey eyes -- a lot more people are experimenting and getting on with this classic retro, with holographic eye colors. And gems, crystals and other accents!

HAIR STYLES

Retro will strongly be coming back with 60s hair flip.

A hair trend that we can expect to see this 2020 are bangs; they are versatile and can accommodate any type of face shape. They also come in different styles, from the wispy baby bangs to the chic curtain bangs.

Textured short bob cuts will also be making an appearance this year. They provide an edgy and youthful vibe which is a perfect look to start the year.

As for hair color, brown is still going strong, however, one can amplify their hair color by adding dimension through balayage or adding soft highlights. A hairstyle that is best partnered with this style are full-body waves because it adds to the volume of the hair which prevents the hair color from falling flat.

ACCESSORIES

Kay Fanlo

People are more aware of the things they are buying nowadays so they will consider functional, sustainable, and earth friendly accessories.

Sparkling accessories will still be a big thing and designers are also pushing for contemporary pieces incorporated with our local and indigenous materials.
