Editorial: Welcoming 2020 with optimism

IN A recent survey by the Social Weather Station (SWS), 96 percent of Filipinos are optimistic for 2020.

In a Philippine News Agency (PNA) report on December 28, 2019, SWS said, "Hope for the New Year has always been high, starting at 87 percent when SWS first asked the question in 2000."

“It rose to 88 percent in 2001 and 95 percent in 2002 before easing to 90 percent in 2003, 81 percent in 2004, and 85 percent in 2005. It ranged from 91 percent to 92 percent from 2006 to 2008 and went up to 89 percent in 2009. It rose to 93 percent in 2010, and has since then been at 90s levels, reaching as high as 96 percent in 2017 and 2019,” it added.

While SWS's survey did not provide a reason as to the cause of optimism, we can safely say that a lot of Filipinos experienced a lot of good in 2019. Some are seeing growth in their business or their careers while others may have ended their 2019 on a high and are about to enter 2020 with a positive outlook.

Sadly, not everyone who welcomed 2020 was in high spirits. Victims of natural disasters welcomed the New Year in their tents or in evacuation areas. Some are away from their families due to work or are someplace else. Others entered the year with pessimism due to personal reasons we may not know.

However, 2020 is the start of another decade, not just a new year. It is the start of a new decade of new opportunities. Whether you entered the New Year with high hopes or none, know that this coming decade holds a lot of opportunities for you.

You may not see hope in 2020 but it does not mean there is no more hope in the coming years.
