Weekend road mishaps kill 4 people, hurt 5

FOUR persons, including a 70-year-old woman, were killed in separate road accidents in Toledo City and in the towns of Argao and Dumanjug over the weekend.

In Barangay Poog, Toledo City at past 11 a.m. yesterday, a delivery truck fell into a river, killing driver Oscar Layson and his assistant Reymart Cañeza.

The vehicle also hit pedestrian Amelita Lapatis, who landed in a hospital after she suffered injuries.

A police investigation found out that the truck owned by GFM Group of Companies came from Cebu City and it was transporting merchandise like kitchenware to a mall in Toledo City.

Traffic investigator PO3 Junar Cinco, in a phone interview, said the vehicle’s brakes may have malfunctioned while Layson was negotiating a curve.

Residents told the police the truck was traveling fast until it zigzagged and hit Lapatis, 42. It then fell 20 feet below.

The front portion of the truck was destroyed, trapping Layson and Cañeza.

Rescuers pulled the victims out of the truck at 1:30 p.m., said Cinco.

Last Saturday at past 4 p.m., Irene Escalante Mamac, 70, died while three others were injured after the tricycle they were riding was hit by another vehicle in Barangay Langtad, Argao.

Police identified the injured passengers as Viviana Genabi, 52; her daughter Baby Jane Genabi, 9; and tricycle driver Pedirito Geabroso, 33. They were rushed to the town’s hospital for treatment.

Before the incident happened, the tricycle and the vehicle of Cebu Electric Cooperative driven by Rodel Recaborda, 38, were traveling on a bridge.

Recaborda reportedly tried to overtake the tricycle, but it hit the latter’s rear.

The tricycle was dragged after the impact.

Recaborda surrendered to the police after the accident.

At 7:30 p.m., Filvincent Landiza, 26, died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with another motorcycle driven by Fritzjay Canoy, 25, in Barangay Liong, Dumanjug.

Canoy also suffered injuries.
